Book Review: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis (from Goodreads):  Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

My Thoughts: I waited quite a while to read this series.  I honestly knew nothing about it except that it was written by one of my favorite authors.  I never read the synopsis or the reviews.  I'm glad I didn't because alien books aren't usually my thing so I don't know if I would have read it but imagine my surprise when I found out Daemon was an alien!

Katy has just moved with her mom to West Virginia.  Her mom wants a new start after Katy's father has passed away.  Katy is perfectly happy to spend the summer at home, blogging about books (how cool is that??) and gardening but her mom wants her to meet people before school so she suggests that Katy meet the neighbors.  Katy goes to ask for directions to the store to appease her mother and meets Daemon, an incredibly hot yet extremely rude guy.  They do not get off to a good start.  However, his sister Dee is another story.  Dee and Katy hit it off right away and become close friends, much to Daemon's dismay.

Katy is at her wit's end trying to understand Daemon's hot and cold attitude towards her.  She is forced to spend time with Daemon and can't decide if there is an attraction between them or not.  It is truly a love/hate relationship.  The Daemon saves Katy's life, not once but twice, and after the second time she is forced to spend even more time with him due to the fact that he has left a "trace" on her.  It is then that Katy discovers Daemon and Dee's secret and learns about the Luxen and the Arum.

I love Katy, Dee, Carissa and Lesa.  They are fun and great friends.  I even loved Daemon.  How could you not love him, even at his worst.  But I could not stand Ash or Andrew.  They were just  nasty.  I did like their brother, Adam, though.  He seemed like he could be decent.

The ending was very action packed.  I do have to say that I thought Katy was one of those dumb characters that just don't think.  Without giving too much away here....I get that she was trying to keep Dee safe but to me there seemed to be so many other options that would have been smarter.  So I was rolling my eyes at that part of the story a little bit.

Other than that, I thought this was a fun read.  It was different for me to read about aliens so I found that refreshing.  I am interested to see how the next book compares.
