Book Review: Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Tiger Lily

**I received this book from Around the World ARC Tours for review**
Summary (from Goodreads):  Before Peter Pan belonged to Wendy, he belonged to the girl with the crow feather in her hair. . . .

Fifteen-year-old Tiger Lily doesn't believe in love stories or happy endings. Then she meets the alluring teenage Peter Pan in the forbidden woods of Neverland and immediately falls under his spell.

Peter is unlike anyone she's ever known. Impetuous and brave, he both scares and enthralls her. As the leader of the Lost Boys, the most fearsome of Neverland's inhabitants, Peter is an unthinkable match for Tiger Lily. Soon, she is risking everything—her family, her future—to be with him. When she is faced with marriage to a terrible man in her own tribe, she must choose between the life she's always known and running away to an uncertain future with Peter.

With enemies threatening to tear them apart, the lovers seem doomed. But it's the arrival of Wendy Darling, an English girl who's everything Tiger Lily is not, that leads Tiger Lily to discover that the most dangerous enemies can live inside even the most loyal and loving heart.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Peaches comes a magical and bewitching story of the romance between a fearless heroine and the boy who wouldn't grow up.

My Thoughts:  This book wasn't really what I was expecting it to be but it was still a really good book!  It was not a happy, light read but was actually pretty sad.  It was really a whole new side to Peter Pan.

I loved how it was told from Tinkerbell's point of view.  As a fairy, Tink can't speak but she can "read" people.  Tink likes Tiger Lily and hangs around her the most.  This way, we get told of Tiger Lily's life.

Tiger Lily is 15 and has not led an easy life.  She was abandoned as a child and found by the Shaman, Tic Tok.  Tic Tok keeps her as his own but the people in the village torment Tiger Lily.  After a couple of events involving crows, the villagers come to believe that Tiger Lily is cursed.  No one wants to be around Tiger Lily except for Pine Sap, another boy who is shunned due to his physical disabilities.  When Tiger Lily takes care of an Englander who was shipwrecked, the villagers become afraid that she has the "age" disease.  You see, no one ages in Neverland and they want to keep it that way.

While taking care of the Englander, Tiger Lily draws the attention of the pirates and Peter Pan.  The pirates, including Captain Hook, are looking for the Lost Boys and Peter Pan.  When Peter captures Tiger Lily, he is scary and dark.  He has some serious issues and is not the carefree boy in the Disney movie.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Tiger Lily and Peter Pan.  There was some serious chemistry there.  Tiger Lily is engaged to Giant (a villager), however, so there is that underlying problem for her.  She keeps it all a secret from Pan and she keeps her relationship with Pan a secret from all the villagers.  You are warned from the very beginning that there are no happy endings in Neverland though.

Wendy was horrible!  She was selfish and mean and just ruined the whole thing.  She didn't care about anything and I just really didn't like her at all!

The ending is horribly sad and will leave you in tears.  You will definitley remember this story though.  It will stick with you for a long time.  While it doesn't have a happy ending, it has a realistic ending and it is a very enjoyable story!

Book Review: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
**I received this book from Around the World ARC Tours**

Synopsis (from Goodreads):  A gorgeous debut about family, friendship, first romance, and how to be true to one person you love without betraying another.

“One thing my mother never knew, and would disapprove of most of all, was that I watched the Garretts. All the time.”

The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not. Loud, numerous, messy, affectionate. And every day from her balcony perch, seventeen-year-old Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them . . . until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs her terrace and changes everything. As the two fall fiercely in love, Jase's family makes Samantha one of their own. Then in an instant, the bottom drops out of her world and she is suddenly faced with an impossible decision. Which perfect family will save her? Or is it time she saved herself?

A dreamy summer read, full of characters who stay with you long after the story is over.

My Thoughts:  By far one of my favorite books of this year!  It will definitely be on my top 10 for 2012 but I'm guessing it will be among my top 3!  It was so refreshing to read and I was so sad to finish it.  It is one of those books that you really can't put down but on the other hand, you want to read it slowly so it never ends.

The story starts with a young Samantha (around 8 years old).  She's outside with her mom and her older sister when they notice a moving van pull in next door.  Enter the Garrett family...a mom, dad, and 5 kids!  Sam's mother is immediately critical and makes it clear to her children that the Garrett family (who will never mow their lawn and leave toys all over and breastfeed on the front porch....gasp!) are not welcome.  Samantha spends the next years secretly watching the Garrets interact with each other and wishing her family life was like the Garrets.

Then one night, Samantha is sitting on her roof spying on the Garret children when Jase Garrett climbs up to sit with Samantha.  The rest, as they say, is history.  Samantha finds herself drawn to Jase and his family, including his little brother.  She ends up babysitting for them and becoming close to the family.

When tragedy strikes, Sam must decide how to handle it.  The decision she made was not what I expected which made it so much better!
I must admit that I have been extremely emotional this week as my grandfather just passed away so I don't know if that played any part in this factor but I actually cried while reading this book!  Yep...cried!  I NEVER cry when reading a book...never!

I loved Samantha, Jase and his whole family and Sam's best friend Nan and her twin brother, Tim.  They were very well developed and so easy to connect too.  As a mom, I found myself connecting to Mrs. Garrett and laughing at some of the things she said and went through.  I loved how the Garret's interacted as a family and how easily they allowed Samantha to enter their lives and become a part of their family.

I enjoyed Sam and Jase's romance.  It has none of the annoying drama or petty issues that a lot of teen romances have.  They were very grown up in their relationship and their decisions.

This is a must read book this June!  It will have you laughing and crying and make you want to be with the characters.  You will want to read it slowly to draw the story out and once you finish it, you will want to start all over on page 1 and reread the whole thing again!  I will not only be buying this book in June, I will be preordering it now!

I'll be MIA for a week...

Some of you know that my grandfather has been very sick since October.  He was suffering from Dementia and Congestive Heart Failure.  Last October we moved him and my grandmother to an assisted living home that had some really amazing care!  We were told he wouldn't live until Christmas.  However, my grandad continued to remain a stubborn German and shocked the doctors by making it past Christmas (we always use to tease him about how stubborn he was)!

In January, he was moved over to the Dementia and Memory Care side of the home.  There he received 24 hour medical care.  He had to remain on oxygen and in a wheelchair and he didn't remember any of us.  It was hard to see him that way.

I spent all last weekend with him as we got the call that he was doing very poorly.  They kept him heavily sedated because he was in so much pain.  His kindeys shut down and he wasn't eating or drinking anything.  They gave him a week.  My uncles both came down and my dad and uncles stayed by his side.  Family members and friends came to say their final goodbyes.  I was able to spend Saturday and Sunday afternoon there and would like to think that he knew we were all there.

On Wednesday, April 25, I got a call from my mom saying he wasn't doing well at all and if I wanted to say a final goodbye then I should head over that night.  So, I told my husband and we waited for my mother-in-law to get to the house to watch the kids and we went over.  We walked into the building at 8:05 PM.  We walked into my grandfather's room at 8:07 PM.  We were told he took his last breath at 8:06 PM.  I was devestated that I wasn't able to say a final goodbye but I was comforted in knowing that he had his three boys there with him and he went peacefully.  I know he is in a better place now, as hard as it is for us to lose him.

Me and my Grandad in 1983

So, I will be away from the computer for a days.  I have a giveaway that is scheduled so make sure you enter that for your chance to win a great book but my reviews and memes are going to be put on hold for about a week.  I need some time to process and get my household back on schedule, not to mention being with family.  Don't worry though, I'll be back soon!

Book Review: Of Poseidon by Anna Banks

Of Poseidon

**I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for review**

Synopsis (from Goodreads):  Galen is the prince of the Syrena, sent to land to find a girl he’s heard can communicate with fish. Emma is on vacation at the beach. When she runs into Galen—literally, ouch!—both teens sense a connection. But it will take several encounters, including a deadly one with a shark, for Galen to be convinced of Emma’s gifts. Now, if he can only convince Emma that she holds the key to his kingdom . . .

Told from both Emma and Galen’s points of view, here is a fish-out-of-water story that sparkles with intrigue, humor, and waves of romance.

My Thoughts:  This story starts with Emma, the main character, taking a vacation with her best friend Chloe.  They are hanging at the beach in Florida when Emma bumps into Galen...and I mean she literally bumps into him. They instantly have a love/hate relationship.  Galen is hot (of course) but really irritating to Emma.  Plus, Galen's sister, Rayna, is a little bit rude and unfriendly.  But all that changes when Emma and Chloe go for a swim in the ocean and Chloe gets attacked by a shark.  Suddenly Emma realizes that she can speak to the fish...and they understand her!

After this, Galen (who is Syrena aka merman) tries to figure out what Emma is.  He moves to her town, enrolls in her high school and makes her accept him into her life.  They must work together to figure out what Emma really is (syrena or human) and how this is going to affect their relationship and the future of the Syrena.

This book was a fun book to read but it wasn't one that I had to read all at once.  In fact, I put it down a couple of times.  One of the main things I didn't like is that it was told in alternating POVs.  Usually I don't mind this but Emma was told in the first person  POV and Galen's side was told in the third person.  It just confused me sometimes and I didn't really like it at all.

I did like Emma.  She was funny and very sarcastic and I enjoyed that.  I also liked how stubborn she was.  Galen would order her to stay out of the water (yes, order her...not ask) and because he didn't ask, she would get in the water for as long as she wanted AND make sure he knew she was doing it.  I got a little irritated with how Galen thought he could treat Emma so I was glad when she was able to stand up for herself (although that was not as often as I would have liked).

I really enjoyed Rayna's character in the beginning as well.  She was very angry at the fact that she was married off to Toraf without her knowledge.  Apparently, in the Syrena world, the male gets to "sift" through the females until he finds one that HE thinks is suitable for a mate.  I guess it doesn't really matter what the female thinks.  Anyways, I liked how Rayna was very rebellious and snarky towards Toraf.  What disappointed me was when Galen and Rayna came back from a visit home and Toraf decides to make Rayna jealous by kissing Emma.  Immediately Rayna is furious at Toraf and Emma and falls madly in love with Toraf.  It just seemed a little fake.

The other thing I didn't care for was the ending.  It was a great cliffhanger, don't get me wrong but we are going along through the hole book trying to figure out who Emma's stalker is and what's going on and then, literally in 1 page, it ends with this crazy cliff hanger.  It just seemed to happen a little too fast.  Their was really no big build up or anything.  I do want to read the next book because of the ending but it was just too quick.

All in all, I think this was a fun read but it certainly wasn't one of those ones that you couldn't put down.  It took me over three weeks to read it because I would put it aside to read other books.  Definitely one you should read before buying.

Book Review: Something Strange and Deadly by Susan Dennard

Something Strange and Deadly

Synopsis (from Goodreads):  There’s something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia…

Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about. Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she’s just read in the newspaper—

The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor…from her brother.

Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she’ll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including their maddeningly stubborn yet handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.

My Thoughts:  My first thought upon seeing this book was "how beautiful is that cover?".  Seriously...it is gorgeous!  Other than that I really didn't have a whole lot of expectations going into this one.  I haven't read too many zombie stories so I thought I'd give this one a try and I'm glad I did!

Eleanor's brother is missing and it is up to her to find him.  Of course, it's all made a little more difficult since the dead are rising!  Eleanor finds out that this is all the doing of a necromancer (love it!) and it is up to her and the Spirit Hunters to figure out how to stop the necromancer.

I really liked Eleanor.  She was independant (although sometimes she was too independant) and stubborn but at the same time she is brave and smart.  I love that she doesn't care what others think of her!  I really liked how snarky she was and how she didn't always do what she was supposed to do.  She was very spunky and I enjoyed that.

Daniel was one of the characters that you just don't know if you love him or hate him.  He is very grumpy at times and you just don't know what to think of him.  I loved his unpredictability.  I really enjoyed the romance because it wasn't too much.  I also loved how it wasn't a resolved relationship at the end.  It kept you guessing as to what would be happening.

This was one of those books that you can't put down once you pick it up.  It keeps your interest throughout the book.  I read it pretty much read it all in a 24 hour period!  A must read for this summer!

Book Review: Small Damages by Beth Kephart

Small Damages

**I received this book from Around the World ARC Tours for review**

Summary (from Goodreads):  It’s senior year, and while Kenzie should be looking forward to prom and starting college in the fall, she is mourning the loss of her father. She finds solace in the one person she trusts, her boyfriend, and she soon finds herself pregnant. Kenzie’s boyfriend and mother do not understand her determination to keep the baby. She is sent to southern Spain for the summer, where she will live out her pregnancy as a cook’s assistant on a bull ranch, and her baby will be adopted by a Spanish couple.

Alone and resentful in a foreign country, Kenzie is at first sullen and difficult. She begins to open her eyes and her heart to the beauty that is all around her and inside of her.

My Thoughts:  The thing I loved most about this book was how it was written as if Kenzie is talking to her unborn child.  It was so different from any other book I've read and was so incredibly sweet!

Kenzie is sent off to live in Spain as an assistant to the cook on a bull ranch during her senior year.  Kenzie is living with Miguel, who is the ranch owner, Estela, the cook and Esteban, who also works at the ranch.  Kenzie is told that she will give her baby to a couple who live in Spain and come home after she has the baby.

Kenzie imagines her baby all the time.  She talks about his/her toes and fingers, knows how he/she is developing all through the pregnancy.  She wants to know what he/she will look like. She tells her story to her baby is flashbacks and that is how we learn what happened.  We learn about Kevin, the baby's father and how he was more concerned with going to Yale than he was about getting his girlfriend pregnant.  We learn about Kenzie's mother who ships her off to Spain so no one will know that the is pregnant.  Kenzie is strong though and in the end, she decides to take her life into her hands, with the help of Estela, Esteban, Miguel and the gypsies.

I loved Estela!  She was grumpy at the beginning and I got the feeling that she didn't approve of Kenzie at first but as the story went on and Kenzie opened up to Estela more, Estela softened and became the friend and mother figure that Kenzie needed.  She was just so real to me that she easily became my favorite character almost from the beginning.

This book was written beautifully and I really didn't want it to end.  You will pick it up and become so involved and wrapped up in Kenzie's life and her relationships with Estela and Esteban.  You will feel what Kenzie feels and understand her confusion about the choice she must make.  This is definitely a book I am going to buy when it comes out in stores!

Book Review: Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross

Kill Me Softly

**I received this book from Around the World ARC Tours for review**

Synopsis (from Goodreads):  Mirabelle's past is shrouded in secrecy, from her parents' tragic deaths to her guardians' half-truths about why she can't return to her birthplace, Beau Rivage. Desperate to see the town, Mira runs away a week before her sixteenth birthday—and discovers a world she never could have imagined.

In Beau Rivage, nothing is what it seems—the strangely pale girl with a morbid interest in apples, the obnoxious playboy who's a beast to everyone he meets, and the chivalrous guy who has a thing for damsels in distress. Here, fairy tales come to life, curses are awakened, and ancient stories are played out again and again.

But fairy tales aren't pretty things, and they don't always end in happily ever after. Mira has a role to play, a fairy tale destiny to embrace or resist. As she struggles to take control of her fate, Mira is drawn into the lives of two brothers with fairy tale curses of their own . . . brothers who share a dark secret. And she'll find that love, just like fairy tales, can have sharp edges and hidden thorns.

My Thoughts:  Mira is turning 16 soon and there is only one thing she wants for her birthday...she wants to visit the town where she was born, find her mom and dad's graves and learn about herself.

Mira was whisked away from Beau Rivage when she was just a baby by her two godmothers.  Her parents died in a fire during Mira's baptism and that is all Mira knows.  Her godmothers have forbidden her to return to Beau Rivage but she has plans to sneak there and find her parents' graves.

Once in Beau Rivage, Mira meets the rebellious Blue and his very charming brother, Felix.  She also becomes acquainted with Blue's friends, Freddie and Viv.

Blue insists that Mira leave and never return.  Mira finds him rude and impossible to be around.  Felix, on the other hand, puts Mira up in his amazing hotel, gives her free reign when it comes to room service and offers to help her find the graves of her parents.

I love that there were so many different fairy tales weaved throughout this story!  They weren't your nice, sweet fairy tales either.  They were a little closer to Grimm's versions of them, dark and slightly twisted.  I loved being able to figure everyone's fairy tale out and I laughed as each character made fun of their curses and the author made little jabs at their curses too (Snow White's Apple logo on her laptop being crossed out is one of many).

The only issue I had a problem with was how quickly Mira went to bed with Felix.  Now, she didn't sleep with him that first night but the fact that she was even contemplating it was bothersome to me.  She had only known him for 2 days and didn't have any experience with men so you would think she would want to get to know him a little better first.  Plus, he was 6 years older than her and at age 15, being that much older makes a difference!

I really enjoyed this book and literally could not put it down!  The twists kept me on my toes and the characters were quirky and funny.  I really hope this becomes a series because there were some loose ends and I would love to read more about Beau Rivage!

Kill Me Softly "He couldn't hope to be good.  All he could hope for was the strength to resist temptation - until his life flickered out like one last match." ~pg. 170 of Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross
